Gender, Ethnicity and Disability Pay Gap Report: 2022

Embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) across our University is crucial to the delivery of our Strategy.
This Gender, Ethnicity and Disability Pay Gap Report: 2022 (PDF) shows where we stand and sets out our plans to drive positive change. This will be complex and challenging: the pay gaps shown in this report do not reflect unequal pay for the same work, but rather broader inequalities related to gender, ethnicity and disability in society. While we are influencing what happens on campus, we repeatedly come up against the societal reality of women and minoritised groups more frequently holding lower paid jobs.
The report shows that between March 2021 and March 2022, we recruited and promoted more women into senior roles, but this was offset by an increase in the recruitment of women at lower grades as well.
There was a slight increase in the gender pay gap this year (0.1%), but we should take heart at the overall decline of 3.5% since 2017. The pay gap now stands at 19% - and we are developing robust EDI targets that will help drive strategic interventions to bring this down further. These include work through our Fairer Futures for All pledges, a full internal review of pay and grading, improving our EDI data and through positive action.
This year we are also publishing our disability and ethnicity pay gaps for the first time. This is important for fully understanding the challenge that we face.
If we are to achieve our ambitions, we must be bold. Our EDI strategy, which was approved by our University Council in May 2022, is roadmap for how we move forward. We have to embrace EDI initiatives holistically and through our core values of inclusion, integrity, compassion and collaboration to drive meaningful institutional change. We have to build exemplary EDI structures, systems, programmes and cultures within our own organisation. Whilst the reasons for pay gaps are complex and somewhat entrenched in society, we are committed to doing all we can to bring about change on our campus.
