In this section you will find equality monitoring information about University of Leeds students relating to:

  • admissions
  • registered students
  • degree classification (attainment)

How will the information be used?

The data will be used in a variety of ways in informing decision making including monitoring progress of the University's Equality and Inclusion Framework.

Admissions

Information broken down by protected characteristics, relating to the University's admissions for the number of students:

  • who applied for an undergraduate / postgraduate course,
  • who were offered a place,
  • who accepted a place to study at Leeds.

Registration

All information is for the academic year 2016 – 17 and relates to undergraduate, taught postgraduate and research postgraduate students, unless otherwise stated. The % figure is calculated from the total known characteristics (i.e. unknown student data has been excluded). A total of 33,028 undergraduate, research and taught postgraduate students registered during this academic period.

Age

Home/EU students:

  • 11.3% of undergraduate students were aged 21 and over (11.5%, 2015/16)

Overseas students:

  • 21.4% of undergraduate students were aged 21 and over (25.3%, 2015/16)

Disability

Home/EU students:

  • 10.7% of students declared a disability (9.8%, 2015/16)
  • The highest disclosed disability was a specific learning difficulty, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia or AD(H)D, at 5.2% of the total student population (5.1%, 2015/16) followed by a mental health condition (2.1%).

Overseas students:

  • 1.7% of students declared a disability (1.9 %, 2015/16)

Ethnicity

Home/EU students:

  • 16.3% of students declared they were from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) background (15.6%, 2015/16)
  • The largest known ethnic groups were Asian or Asian British - Pakistani (3.2%) and Asian or Asian British - Indian (2.9%)

Overseas students:

  • 93.5% of students declared they were from a Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) background (92%, 2015/16)
  • 31.5% of students declared they were from a Chinese background (24.6%, 2015/16)

Gender

Home/EU students:

  • 61.1% were female (60.8%, 2015/16)
  • 62.2% of undergraduate students were female (61.6%, 2015/16)
  • 60.9% of taught postgraduate students were female (62.5%, 2015/16)
  • 48.6% of research postgraduate students were female (48%, 2015/16)

Overseas students

  • 57.9% of overseas students were female (57.6%, 2015/16)
  • 49% of undergraduate students were female (50%, 2015/16)
  • 48.3% of taught postgraduate students were female (66.7%, 2015/16)
  • 48.3% of students registered for a research postgraduate course were female (47.6%, 2015/16)

Gender identity

Religion

Home/EU students:

  • 54.1% stated they have no religion (51.6%, 2015/16)
  • 33.5% stated they belong to the Christian faith (36.1%, 2015/16)
  • 5.8% stated they belong to the Muslim faith (5.6%, 2015/16)

Overseas students:

  • 35.7% stated they have no religion (31.3%, 2015/16)
  • 30.9% of students stated they belong to the Muslim faith (32.7%, 2015/16)
  • 16.5% stated they belong to the Christian faith (19.7%, 2015/16)

Parent/caring responsibilities

Home/EU students:

  • 4.4% declared they had parental/caring responsibilities. The student category with the highest declaration of caring responsibilities was taught postgraduates (10.7%)

Overseas students:

  • 7.3% declared they had parent/caring responsibilities. The student category with the highest declaration of caring responsibilities was research postgraduates (13.8%)

Sexual orientation

Home/EU students:

  • 94.6% stated they were heterosexual/straight (95.2%, 2015/16)
  • 4.6% stated they were lesbian, gay or bisexual (4.1%, 2015/16)

Overseas students:

  • 93.4% stated they were heterosexual/straight (95.6%, 2015/16)
  • 4.9% stated they were lesbian, gay or bisexual (3.1%, 2015/16)

Degree classification (attainment)

Information on the degree classification (the attainment) of students completing an undergraduate course by age, disability, ethnicity and gender for the academic periods 2013/14 – 2015/16.
