Disability Equality at the University of Leeds

The Equality & Inclusion Unit (EPU) has been working with colleagues across campus to progress Disability Equality, including collaborative work towards a Disability Equality Framework.

As part of the University’s Equality and Inclusion Framework, the Equality and Inclusion Delivery Group (E&IDG), in collaboration with colleagues across campus, has been drafting a Disability Equality Framework which will set out the University’s broad commitments and vision for progressing disability equality and inclusion at the University for 2021-24.

This activity has coincided with UK Disability History Month (UKDHM), an annual event focused on the history of disabled people’s fight for equality and human rights. This year the awareness month is from Wednesday 18 November to Friday 18 December and a range of activities have already taken place to mark the month, visit the EPU UKDHM 2020 event page to find out more.

Progressing Disability Equality at the University of Leeds

We are dedicated to improving disability equality and inclusion, and the Disability Equality Framework will provide a clear pathway for this. The commitments within the framework will focus on the areas of culture, staff, students, research and infrastructure, and will be underpinned by an action plan that will set out objectives to make progress within the next few years.

The EPU have been consulting with stakeholders across the institution to ensure that the framework reflects the values, expertise and lived experience of our staff and students. We’d like to thank the individuals and teams who have taken the time to provide feedback and support this productive process.

A progress summary was presented at the most recent Equality and Inclusion Delivery Group meeting on 9 December and a further draft of the disability framework will be shared soon with stakeholders for final comments before being presented at the next Equality and Inclusion Board meeting in February.

The next stage of activity will involve the development of a detailed Action Plan with specific plans for how we will deliver on the commitments in the Disability Equality Framework. See the Race Framework and Race Equality Action Plan for an example of similar work.
